Bringing communities together for nature

Nextdoor Nature is bringing communities together to help nature flourish where they live and work! Thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Nextdoor Nature will provide people with the advice and support they need to help nature on their doorstep, and leave a lasting natural legacy in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

What is Nextdoor Nature?

With evidence of a climate and nature crisis becoming clearer every day, Nextdoor Nature aims to bring communities together in Surrey to help wildlife flourish where people live and work!

Every one of us can make a difference to bring back nature and tackle climate change by taking small actions that add up to big changes. We're excited to support communities to do just that through Nextdoor Nature - a grassroots programme of transformational micro-projects designed to help nature thrive.

At Surrey Wildlife Trust, Nextdoor Nature aims to support communities in creating wildlife friendly green spaces within their local areas as part of a 'Nature Recovery Network.

We’re asking communities and schools within Guildford (Stoke and Westborough) and Woking (Sheerwater and Maybury) to get in touch to take action for nature. We want to hear how people want to restore nature within their community’s green spaces.

What do we mean by ‘communities’?

You may not consider yourself to be part of a community group, and that’s okay! We’re referring to any pockets of people who meet up and share a common interest.

Examples of community groups could include but are not limited to:

Religious groups
Uniform groups (e.g. Scouts and Guides)
Community allotments
Committees
Community centres
Youth club
Schools
Playgroups

How will we help?

We want to support as many individuals as possible to connect with nature and increase biodiversity. We understand that nature is integral in supporting physical and mental wellbeing and we want to help communities to develop and maintain the green spaces in their surrounding areas.

We will be supporting communities in learning new skills, planning and undertaking projects and connecting with other community groups. When communities work together, the possibilities for positive change are endless. We will organise communities, bringing people together to take action for nature within their local areas. We want to hear what change communities want to see within their local areas, and we want to empower people to make that change.

The programme overview is outlined within the Nextdoor Nature Project Logic Models which can be found within the Supporting Documentation section below.

Guildford Goes Wild

On Saturday 15th July 2023, Surrey Wildlife Trust brought together communities from across Surrey. Organised in collaboration with ZERO Carbon Guildford, the event featured more than six local wildlife organisations for a day of free inspiration, activism, and fun for people of all ages.

A series of talks from engaging and knowledgeable speakers took place throughout the day. The talks aimed to encourage individuals and communities to take action for nature by wildlife gardening, working with community groups and speaking up for nature. Click on the below tiles to watch the talk recordings.

Guildford Goes Wild was a Nextdoor Nature community event and as such was supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), creating a legacy for The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
