Farmland Bird Survey Volunteer
Skylark - David Tipling/2020VISION
Position details
Commitment:
Weekdays, Weekends, Any DayOverview of the role:
Farmland bird populations are in decline and therefore we are carrying out this survey to increase our understanding of their abundance and distribution across Surrey.
By volunteering with us, you will be contributing to our records of a variety of different farmland bird species. We carried out initial surveys over the spring/summer 2026 and will now be continuing throughout the winter months.
To get you started, we will be offering training sessions at our head office in Pirbright. These sessions will give you all the knowledge and tools to carry out the survey successfully and help contribute to the data that is being collected. These sessions will take place on 5th November or 26th November - you are welcome to attend on either date.
Time commitment:
Flexible. You can fit this volunteering around a busy schedule and take part when it suits you.
Locations:
Surveys can take place across Surrey. Although you will be looking for farmland birds, they can also be found in habitats such as grassland. Volunteers are responsible for ensuring they have permission to access land, unless surveying from a public right of way.
What’s involved:
Each survey takes approximately 10 mins per 'field parcel' (this will be explained further in the training session).
Activities include:
- Identifying farmland birds
- Learning different bird calls
- Providing data which will allow us to have conversations with different landowners across Surrey
- Following Surrey Wildlife Trust's lone working and health & safety guidance
Skills and experience:
No previous survey experience is required. Training will be provided in the form of a face-to-face training session.
- A passion for ornithology or a willingness to learn about different bird species
- Be comfortable walking on uneven ground and different habitats
- Be able to use a smartphone to collect data on a bespoke app
By volunteering, you could:
- Spend time outdoors and explore new wildlife sites in your area
- Learn species identification and survey techniques
- Be part of a wider citizen science project supporting nature recovery
Next steps:
To take part, you’ll need to register as a volunteer. Once registered, you’ll receive further information about how to book onto one of the training sessions.
Age guidance:
- Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (who must also register as a volunteer).
Equality, diversity and inclusion:
Surrey Wildlife Trust is committed to an inclusive and diverse volunteer programme where everyone feels welcomed, valued and supported to take part.
