The Black Darter is one of Surrey’s rarer Dragonfly species, with very few records being generated. Our hope with this project is to gather more records and hopefully some new sites where this species lives.
By signing up to this project you will be expected to head out across our vast heathlands and check for this species flying around acidic water bodies. Full training is provided within the form of a video, and you will need some form of camera to complete the survey.
Time commitment:
Flexible. You can fit this volunteering around a busy schedule and take part when it suits you.
Locations:
Surveys can take place across Surrey. Volunteers are responsible for ensuring they have permission to access land, unless surveying from a public right of way.
What’s involved:
To check a pond/body of water it would be recommend standing for around ten minutes to see what Dragonflies fly past.
You will support Surrey’s recording scheme of a rare species. Therefore, adding to our knowledge of a species distribution and the number of individuals.
Activities include:
- Identifying Dragonflies
- Recording survey results
- Adding information to Black Darter distribution in Surrey
- Following Surrey Wildlife Trust's lone working and health & safety guidance
Skills and experience:
No previous survey experience is required. Training will be provided in the form of a pre-recorded video.
- A passion for insects especially Dragonflies
- Be comfortable walking on uneven ground across Heathland sites
- Be able to use a camera/phone device to take pictures
- Be able to take a grid reference
You must take a grid reference if you are submitting a record, either out in the field or at home using an ordinance survey map or grid reference finder online. If you know the name of the site please include that information.
By volunteering, you could:
- Spend time outdoors and explore new wildlife sites in your area
- Learn species identification and survey techniques
- Contribute to protecting a priority species
- Be part of a wider citizen science project supporting nature recovery

Age guidance:
- Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (who must also register as a volunteer).
- Volunteers aged 16/17 can attend unaccompanied but must complete a parent/guardian consent form before taking part.
