National Funding Opportunities

National Lottery - Awards for All England - Environment
Location: England
Funding amount: £300-20,000
Who can apply?
- constituted voluntary or community organisation
- constituted group or club
- registered charity
- charitable incorporated organisation (CIO)

- school, if the project helps the local community, not just the school
- statutory body (including local authorities, town, parish, and community councils)

What can they fund?
The climate and nature emergency affects us all, but local action can make a real difference. We fund community-led projects that improve the environment and help people connect with and enjoy nature where they live.
We fund projects that meet one of the following priorities:
- Help people connect with and care for nature in their area
- Make a positive difference to the environment
You can use the funding to:
- start a new activity or continue an existing one
- help your organisation adapt to new challenges
- run one-off events that have a clear environmental benefit

Woodland Trust - Free Trees for Schools and Communities
Location: United Kingdom

Who can apply?
- Schools across the UK, plus nurseries, colleges, universities and outdoor learning centres
- All kinds of different groups such as resident associations, sports clubs, parish councils, scouts, guides and many more
- You don’t need to belong to an official organisation
What can they fund?
Free tree packs.
Packs come in eight different species mixes of 15, 30, 105 or 420 saplings to accommodate every project and give everyone chance to plant a tree. Whether you’re growing an outdoor classroom, sheltering a sports pitch or transforming your neighbourhood, get involved and make a real difference for people and nature where you live, work or play.
- Schools: trees should be planted on either the school grounds, land the school has arranged regular access to or in an area that is publicly accessible
- Community Groups: trees should be planted on land which is accessible to the public
- You should also make sure that your local community is aware of your plans to plant and are happy for you to go ahead
Deadline(s): 2 deadlines per annum with two deliveries a year - in March and November. Currently taking applications for tree packs to be delivered in March 2027. Applications are expected to close in January. You will know within eight weeks if your application is successful.
National Highways Community Trees Programme
Location: England
Funding amount: A selection of tree species, with orders of between 500-50,000 whips per application.

- Farmers
- Private sector organisations incl. care homes
What can they fund?
We are looking to support well-planned tree planting projects that will directly benefit people, communities and wildlife.
We would love to support all applicants, however tree stock is limited so projects will be assessed and scored more highly if they align with the key criteria below:
- Clear community benefit and involvement, such as volunteering, education, or wellbeing initiatives.
- Improvements in biodiversity at the planting site.
- Clear understanding of site suitability for tree planting, based on site-specific considerations.
- Thoughtful tree selection following “right tree, right place” principles, supported by a detailed planting plan.
- Contribution to climate resilience (e.g. riparian planting, sustainable drainage in urban areas).
- Close proximity to the National Highways network (not essential, however will strengthen your application).
- Comprehensive establishment and aftercare plan, including a commitment to maintain the trees and site for a minimum of three years.
- Willingness to provide content for external communications purposes.
- Commitment to participate in monitoring and evaluation activities post planting.
Deadline(s): The fund will remain open until all tree stock has been allocated. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received; early applications are strongly encouraged.
Alpkit Foundation

Matthew Good Foundation

Funding amount: £15,000 shared between 5 shortlisted projects

Southall Trust
Location: United Kingdom
Funding amount: up to £5,000
Who can apply?
- Charities that show creativity and innovation in their work.
- Charities that promote social justice, inclusion and diversity.
- Charities that challenge structural inequalities and injustice.
- Charities making good use of volunteers.
- Charities that are engaged with their local community and show clear evidence of support from within it (e.g. through local giving, volunteering and/or partnerships).

Suez Community Fund Grants
Location:
To be eligible for a SUEZ Communities Fund grant in England, your project must be located within one of the active funding zones. A funding zone is the area surrounding a qualifying site owned by the donor, SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK. Please check the Postcode Checker, to confirm your eligibility, before you apply.

Funding amount: Up to £50,000 to not-for-profit organisations in England
Who can apply?
- Voluntary organisations, community groups / associations, sports clubs (note exclusion criteria regarding membership restrictions), local and national Charities
- Parish Community Councils / Town Councils
- Local Authorities
- Social enterprises and Community Interest Companies operating on a non-profit-distributing basis. These are defined by Social UK as ‘businesses that trade to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, or the environment. They make their money from selling goods and services in the open market, but they reinvest their profits back into the business or the local community.
These organisations must have a minimum of three unrelated Directors, that also do not reside at the same address.
What can they fund?
Grants are available for community projects delivering capital improvements to public amenities. Examples may include:
- Village hall improvements
- Nature reserves and conservation
- Village greens
- Community centres
- Public playgrounds
- Cycle paths
- Sports fields and facilities
- Country parks
- Historic buildings, structures or sites (improvements to places of religious worship will only be considered if Grade I designated. Projects to improve other historic buildings, structures or sites must be Grade I, II or II* or have another significant heritage designation i.e. Scheduled Ancient Monument)

Morrisons Foundation
Location: United Kingdom
Funding amount: Up to £10,000 for capital spend or direct project delivery.
Who can apply?
Registered charities making a positive difference in local communities in England, Wales and Scotland.
The Morrisons Foundation prioritises applications from small charities, those with an income of less than £1m, but applications from larger charities are welcome.
What can they fund?
Applications should deliver on (at least) one of three objectives to be considered for support, these are:
1. Tackling poverty and social deprivation;
2. Enhancing community spaces, facilities and services;
3. Improving health and wellbeing.
Deadline(s): Applications are accepted and reviewed on a continual basis, there is no deadline for requests to be submitted
International Tree Foundation
Location: United Kingdom
Funding amount:
This grant covers the funding for community woodlands and hedging: Projects to range from 100 – 10,000 trees planted per year, with a maximum price equivalent to £2.15/tree (inclusive of tree protection and mulch). In addition, these projects also receive two maintenance grants equivalent to £0.10/tree, both in the first and second summers after planting.
Who can apply?
- Your organisation must be community-based and/or have a social benefit e.g. a school, community group, social enterprise, non-governmental organisation, parish council, etc.
- You must have a bank account in the name of the applicant organisation
- You must have signed permission from the owner or manager of the land indicating that the project meets all legal requirements
ITF’s priorities for this round of the UK Community Tree Planting Programme are to support community-based tree planting initiatives that meet the following essential criteria:
- Plant trees in public/publicly-accessible spaces: sites that are accessible to the public, including schools, parks, rights of way, and sites managed by community groups
- Plant indigenous tree species. This may include traditional fruit trees and ‘honorary natives’ where appropriate
- Engage community members in tree planting and enjoying the benefits of woodlands
- Have clear plans for maintenance and sustainability
In this Call for Proposals, we are also interested in applications which meet one of more of the following additional criteria:
- Engage children and young adults in tree planting and learning about trees
- Engage vulnerable groups and groups with low access to woodlands
- Create biodiversity habitat
- Conserve soil and water
- Demonstrate new approaches, such as agroforestry
- Support rewilding and natural regeneration
- Support work or research on tree pest and disease resistance and climate change adaptation
- Support urban tree planting
What can they fund?

In addition to financial support, we can provide physical trees and expert consultation and advice for projects that need it. This may include help with project design, species selection, ground preparation and so on.

Our Local Nature Grant Scheme - The Linnean Society
Location: United Kingdom
Funding amount: £1,000
The Our Local Nature Grant scheme is designed to provide young people with an opportunity to take the lead on projects that involve their local nature and natural spaces, to aid young people in realising their influence to affect positive change, to have their voices heard, and see their ideas come to life.
Who can apply?
These grants are available to individuals and organisations who are linked with a group of young people anywhere in the UK.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- school staff
- student groups
- home education groups
- community groups
- small charities.
There must be evidence that the applicant is linked with a group of young people. We will not award more than one grant to any one applicant in any one year.
Our application process is designed to be simple to allow young people to apply with adult support. We aim to encourage thoughtful applications without too much strain on your valuable time.
What can they fund?
We recognise the expertise of young people and those that work closely with them, and so we are keen to hear what activities you think would work best for engaging people with your local nature and natural spaces.
The grant can be used for materials, room hire, publicity, public-speakers, training-professionals, contractors and freelancers, project-specific staff costs (see limitation below), audio-visual hire, reasonable volunteer expenses, transport or other costs of activities/ events.
The grant cannot be used for large prizes, on-going salary costs, costs that are already covered by other funding, general running costs, retrospective spending, activities outside the project period, and overheads that are paid for by other income. More than half of the grant cannot be spent on refreshments or project-specific staff costs.

Community Foundation for Surrey

We support local charities, and community and voluntary groups in Surrey whose work benefits our communities. We welcome applications from both new and established groups and also have several funds that award grants to support individuals.
The grant funding we award is made possible by local Donors, spread across 85+ funds. When considering your application, we will match it with the criteria of our various funds, which cover across the county.

- Faith groups, where the project clearly benefits the wider community
- Educational establishments for exceptional projects that fall outside statutory support

- Small and newly formed groups which are not constituted or cannot meet the eligibility criteria may apply under the umbrella of another group

Our Priorities:
- Projects which particularly support communities in Surrey facing disadvantage
- Local and small grassroots organisations (income under £100,000) serving the Surrey community
- Medium sized local Surrey-based organisations which typically lack the capacity to attract support from national funders (turnover to £1M)
- Larger local organisations are encouraged to apply where they are providing particular capability or services for the community in Surrey
- We particularly welcome applications from organisations which can demonstrate that lived experience of their potential beneficiaries is reflected in the management and/or governance of the organisation or in the development of the planned service delivery
- We particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups in our community

Your Councillor Community Fund
Location: Surrey
Funding amount: Each existing Surrey County Councillor has £10,000 of funding this financial year to support residents and community organisations to deliver activities that benefit local people in their neighbourhoods
Who can apply?
- Residents, voluntary and community organisations who would like to support community improvements or projects in their neighbourhoods.
What can they fund?
Your Councillor Community Fund (YCCF) funding can be used for one-off activities that cost just a few pounds, alternatively it can contribute to projects that cost much more. YCCF funding is flexibly designed to support a huge variety of projects including:
- purchasing sports equipment for local clubs.
- the creation of websites to reach more residents.
- transport costs for community outings.
- environmental testing of local rivers.
- skills training for vulnerable groups.

Guildford Aspire Community Grants

Lower Mole Countryside Trust
Location: Mole Valley, north Surrey and Kingston upon Thames
Funding amount: up to £500
Who can apply?
- Local groups, schools, associations and Lower Mole Partnership
What can they fund?
Conservation and access projects
- The following are the criteria for applications:
Must be in accordance with the aims of the Trust
Should be visible to the public and/or of benefit to the public
If the proposal relates to conservation interest it must be in line with the relevant Habitat Action Plan or Species Action Plan
If the proposal improves public access it must not be detrimental to any conservation interest
It should be supported by the local community.

Nature Based Solutions funding for landowners & managers
If you are a landowner or manage land you may be able to obtain funding for certain restoration or intervention works on your land.
Better Futures Fund - SES Water
Location: Located within the SES Water service area
Funding amount: Grants of £1,000-£7,000
Who can apply?
You need to be located within our service area. The following are eligible to apply:
- Schools, colleges or academies
- Registered charities and other not-for-profit organisations
- Constituted groups or clubs
- Community Interest Companies (CICs)
- Local community groups such as: cricket club, allotment group, scout group, garden club etc
What can they fund?
To apply for a share of the community funding, your project needs to involve one or more of the following:
- Nature and the environment
Projects and organisations that directly impact and protect nature for the benefit of community health and wellbeing. - Education
Providing new opportunities to help people of all ages grow and develop. - Community
Groups that bring people together to create a sense of purpose within communities. - Vulnerability
Organisations providing care and support to people who need extra help.
Things we can fund include:
- Equipment hire and purchase
- Skills and training
- Employee salaries for time dedicated to working directly on the project
- Professional fees i.e. builders, groundworkers or an interpretation design agency
