Stories aren’t just written in books...

Stories can be confronting, inspirational, exciting or illuminating.  Whether your passion is art, videomaking, writing, history or science we want you to help us tell a story about how import hedgerows are for wildlife and reversing the ecological and climate crises.

Your story

We have purposefully left the competition very open for participants to tell their story, their way. We welcome written tales and creative writing pieces but know there are many ways to tell a story. If you adopt a different media for your piece (video, artistic, series of images) it must have impact and narrative power. We are excited to see how entrants captivate us with their diverse stories.

Get inspired with our three unique entry categories!

Hedgerow Histories

The history of the hedgerow is a rich one but it is not without its tragedy. Can you tell the beautiful tale of the hedgerow through ages? The perils it has faced? The decline it has suffered? Can you interweave the intricacy and precision of the hedgelayer with the way a dormouse skitters through the branches? We want you to bring the history of the hedgerow to life, bringing its rich complexity into an even more complex modern world.

We would like to see works which capture the history of the hedgerow in this category. Whether a series of images through the ages of how hedgerows have changed, to a short story demonstrating how our management of hedgerows has changed and is affecting them. Delve into the history of the hedge and it’s place in our living history to capture our imaginations.

Tales of Life in the Hedge

“Reservoirs of life” hedgerows are bursting with creatures big and small but can you bring them to life? Whether it’s the hedgehog snuffling amongst the leaves at the base of the hedge or the Blackbird singing from the very top branch; we want to know their story. Whether you tell the tale of the hedgerow and all its’ creatures or focus on your favourite or most enigmatic character, tell their story and why hedgerows are so valuable to be in with a chance to win in this category.

We want creatives to focus on hedgerow wildlife and the rich diversity of species hedgerows support in this category. You can focus on one species or convey the abundance and variety of species, the decision is yours.

Hedgerows and the ecological/climate crisis

Have you heard about hedgerows? The silent wall of defence against the ecological and climate crisis? Protecting us against pollution in our cities better than trees? …No? Well, you’re not alone. We need people to know about the vital role they play but how do we do this? Can you capture the attention, the imagination and the passions of the public and communicate how valuable hedgerows are in the fight for our climate and our wildlife?

Whether through video, creative writing, spoken word, a picture which tells a 1000 words or even a series of prints, whatever your medium, we want you to shout about hedgerows. They need your voice and your talent. Have you heard about hedgerows? Well you’re going to.
