Heritage Lottery Fund

What is the National Lottery?

The National Lottery – and with it National Lottery funding for good causes like heritage, arts, sport and charities – was established in 1994. Every ticket sold contributes funds to good causes across the UK.

National Lottery funding through the Heritage Lottery Fund is one of Surrey Wildlife Trusts most important sources of income and has helped us to achieve  amazing things for people and wildlife.

About the Heritage Lottery Fund

The Heritage Lottery Fund is the largest dedicated funder of heritage in the UK.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has invested a total of £7.1bn in 40,000 heritage projects. Surrey Wildlife Trust projects supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund have already benefited thousands of people from all walks of life – helping them to experience the joy of wildlife in their daily lives.

How HLF has helped us transform places and lives

Nower Wood Education Centre

Surrey Wildlife Trust received a grant of nearly £363,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the redevelopment of its flagship Nower Wood Education Centre.

Surrey Wildlife Trust received a grant of nearly £363,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the redevelopment of its flagship Nower Wood Education Centre.

The cash was a fantastic boost for the £1.1m project, which transformed the woodland centre near Leatherhead.

The 81 acres of ancient woodland was bought for use as an educational nature reserve in 1971 for visitors to take part in pond-dipping, bug hunts, tree identification, mammal studies and environmental surveys. The existing wooden huts dated back to the early 1970s – were old, creaky and leaky and the toilets froze over in the winter!

The new building now provides us with three fantastic new modern classrooms, so we can continue to inspire students to get out and get closer to nature. The new facility has also enabled the Trust to expand its programme of educational activities and has opened up Nower Wood to new audiences, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

More about Nower Wood

The rebuilding of Nower Wood is a dream we’ve held for over ten years and we are over the moon that we’ve been able to make it a reality.
