Standard Sessions

Woodland Explorer

This flexible session can be tailored to the needs of your group – a walk in the wood, magical in itself, can be adapted to include wildlife-themed fun and games and a whole host of sensory activities focussed on the subject(s) of your choice – such as trees, minibeasts, habitats, seasonal features, anything you like!

Pond Dipping

Explore the underwater world from the dry pond-side with our purpose-built dipping platforms. Find all sorts of wonderful creatures you never knew existed – dragonfly nymphs, water beetles, newts and caddis-fly larvae all await your discovery under the green and weedy water!

Minibeast Hunt

There are a surprising number of places in a nature reserve that minibeasts can call home, and in this session we will explore lots of different habitats to see what we can find living in them. We will sweep the grass and beat a tree, hunt under logs and even play some games that help us to understand what the world would be like if we were one of these minibeasts ourselves.

Creatures of the Night

(available in May and September)

Discover the creatures who call the night-time wood their home. As dusk falls you might meet scurrying shrews and fluttering moths, squeaking bats and croaking toads – the woodland never sleeps and this is your chance to experience the sounds and smells of nature’s night-time.

We will begin in the Field Centre where you will be shown all you need to know about using a compass and setting a bearing – a skill that should last a lifetime. Then in small groups you will be sent off to follow a trail around the wood, learning about the habitats around you and gathering clues about a mystery animal whose name is only revealed when the trail is completed…

Bat evening

(available in May and September)

Come and learn about these fantastic flying mammals in a place they call home. We’ll learn some batty facts and play some batty games before heading out into the wood at dusk with bat detectors to hear them hunting overhead – an experience never to be forgotten!

Campfire’s Burning!

(maximum 16)

We will collect firewood on our way to a woodland camp, where we will gather to learn some basic fire safety rules before practicing fire-lighting with a flint and steel, and then building a fire so we can cook some tasty treats. By the time we go home everyone will have mastered the art of striking a spark and capturing it to make a flame. This session is excellent fun and gives us a chance to sing songs around a campfire while our marshmallows are toasting! There may also be time to use simple hand tools to make something to take home as a memento of your experience.
