Bagmoor Common

Large_bagmoor_common_-_simon_humphreysBagmoor Common by Simon Humphreys

Bagmoor Common is situated on Folkstone Beds (Lower Greensand Series) and is typical of the heathland found in south-west Surrey. It was at one time open heath but has now reverted to birch woodland, which Surrey Wildlife Trust is gradually clearing through a programme of tree-felling.

Woodland butterflies, notably white admiral and purple emperor, are a feature of this reserve. Woodpeckers and tits, including willow tit, are present and roe deer are occasionally seen. The stream on the southern boundary is inhabited by both British species of ‘agrion’ dragonfly. Kingfishers can also be seen on this reserve.

There are some Scot pines, oaks and aspen and a number of open spaces with rough grass and other plants including purple moor grass, species of rush and valerian, opposite-leaved golden saxifrage, hemp agrimony and lady fern are also present.

Management is aimed at extending the areas of open grass heath and diversifying the woodland habitats by traditional coppicing.

The reserve is located to the west of Milford. Access is via a footpath off the A3 through Borough Farm, and off the B3001 opposite Blacklands Farm. Bus no 46 stops 1 mile away.
