Bisley & West End Commons

Areas of open heathland and secondary woodland, which are home to an array of flora and fauna.

Bisley and West End Commons are situated in the north west of Surrey immediately to the west of the A322 between Knaphill and West End. These two reserves have areas of open heathland and secondary woodland, which are home to an array of flora and fauna.

Bisley Commons

Much of these reserves are covered in scrub and secondary woodland. There are pockets of heathland which support cross-leaved heath & dwarf gorse. Purple moor-grass is generally the more dominant of the species. The secondary woodland includes stands of mature aspen and willow carr.

West End Commons

Similar species to Bisley exist on this reserve, plus high quality large stands of open heathland. The wet/humid heath is well developed with deer grass, and there is also a high frequency of common dodder.

Lichen flora is also well developed with many of the classic heathland species present. The surrounding woodland contains species such as mature Scots pine, oak and holly, along with old hazel coppice stools. There is evidence of foxes and roe deer throughout the area, which if you are lucky, can be spotted during dawn and dusk. An abundance of common bird species also breed here; such as the linnet, whitethroat, stonechat, lesser spotted woodpecker, garden warbler and skylark. During the summer many butterfly species can be seen across these areas include grayling and white admiral.
