Bags of Cash for Chitty's Common

The Trust is celebrating the news that it’s bagged the top grant of £12,000 from Tesco supermarket for an important conservation project near Guildford.

Surrey Wildlife Trust won the top award of £12,000!

The project at Chitty’s Common was voted for by Tesco customers as part of the ‘Bags of Help’ scheme, which raises funds from the five pence charge levied on single-use carrier bags.

Surrey Wildlife Trust Ranger Leo Jennings said: “We are absolutely delighted and very grateful to all the Tesco’s customers who voted for us. This money will make a real difference to both wildlife and residents in the Guildford area.

“The main aim of the Chitty’s Common project is to remove a dilapidated boardwalk and to rebuild it in the wettest sections, which will give visitors much better access. We will also be doing some tree safety work and ditch management to alleviate local flooding.”

The grant will also enable Trust staff and volunteers to work on eradicating non-indigenous species such as the invasive Japanese knotweed and laurel, which are a problem on the site.

The 11 acre common is less than 3 miles north-west of Guildford town centre, but despite its relatively small size, Chitty’s Common is a real wildlife haven. It includes grassland, woodland and pond habitats, which are home to many types of butterflies, small mammals, birds, amphibians and insects.

Leo added:

“We can now deliver important improvement works at Chitty’s Common that would otherwise have been beyond our financial reach. This also opens up opportunities for volunteers to get involved, develop their skills and reap the mental and physical benefits that working for wildlife can bring. We are thrilled – thank-you Tesco!”

The Chitty’s Common project was voted for by Tesco customers in the Guildford Superstore, Guildford Bridge Express and the Ashvale Lysons Avenue Express. They chose Surrey Wildlife Trust as their favourite good cause, which meant it won the top award of £12,000!
