Birds (half day, available at Bay Pond only)
Key Stage 2
Bay Pond
Birds Sc2 1abc 4abc 5abcde (half day) (Available at Bay Pond only)
The children will be encouraged to look at birds in their natural habitat and record their observations on a simple worksheet. This will involve them walking around the reserve in small groups and includes a visit to a bird hide. Topics such as ‘are birds animals?’, ‘the differences and similarities between birds and humans’, food chains and life cycles are covered and games are used to show how birds are adapted for feeding, movement and breeding. There is also a presentation to show how birds use song to communicate with each other.
Our sessions are always planned and presented with the Health & Safety of the
students in mind. The activities instil an awareness of the importance of observation when studying
animals and plants in their natural habitats. Students are encouraged to treat the organisms with
care and sensitivity. We also emphasise the need to look after our environment. Most importantly
we hope you enjoy your day out, and return to school with a better understanding of how we
fit into the natural world.
