Woodland Ecology (half day)

'A' Levels and IB

Nower Wood

Large_mini_beast_bpSoil and invertebrate samples being taken

Data are collected on the plants in the field layers of a recently coppiced and an old coppiced woodland using either a belt or line transect or XY grid and random numbers. A quadrat or point quadrat is used to measure % cover, frequency or diversity of plants in the field layer.

Abiotic measurements of light, relative humidity, temperature and soil pH and texture are taken. The data can be analysed using statistical techniques. Competition between plants and the presence of indicator species in ancient woodlands are also discussed.

Our sessions are always planned and presented with the Health & Safety of the students in mind. The activities instil an awareness of the importance of observation when studying animals and plants in their natural habitats. Students are encouraged to treat the organisms with care and sensitivity. We also emphasise the need to look after our environment. Most importantly we hope you enjoy your day out, and return to school with a better understanding of how we fit into the natural world.
