Coppiced Comparison (full or half day)

Key Stage 4

Nower Wood

Large_coppice4Coppice

This session compares the distribution and relative abundance of flora between an area of newly coppiced and mature coppiced woodland. The structure of the woodland and coppicing is discussed. A variety of techniques can be incorporated into this study including the use of environmental meters, soil testing for pH, texture and type, soil and air thermometers and random sampling of plants using quadrats and transects.

Our sessions are always planned and presented with the Health & Safety of the students in mind. The activities instil an awareness of the importance of observation when studying animals and plants in their natural habitats. Students are encouraged to treat the organisms with care and sensitivity. We also emphasise the need to look after our environment. Most importantly we hope you enjoy your day out, and return to school with a better understanding of how we fit into the natural world.
