My time volunteering

Posted: Thursday 14th May 2015 by Volunteering

I have now been volunteering with Surrey Wildlife Trust for 10 months and it continues to be so enjoyable.

I have helped out at so many more events and I have learned so much. I have also been given more responsibility. In March 2015 I organised a child’s birthday party and I am currently helping to design an interpretation board for a site that Surrey Wildlife Trust help to manage. I also assisted the team with a Forest School for Lower Kingswood Primary School. This is one of my highlights as I had a great time getting to know the children and watching them develop throughout the sessions. I also helped to plan the sessions so it was great to see it run so well. Other highlights include a Family Easter event, a Habitat day, an Inset session, a Work Party with the Rangers and a Wild Wednesday.

During my time with the Trust I have also done a few courses including; Outdoor First Aid, Forest School Assistant Level 2 and I have just started the Forest School Leader Level 3 course. With the courses that I have done and the skills that I have learned I have been able to really build up my CV.

I began volunteering with the Surrey Wildlife Trust because I was interested in a career in outdoor education. I am pleased to say that I will be starting a new job in September as an Outdoor Education Assistant at Longacre School, Shamley Green. I have learned so much from the Outdoor Learning team and they have helped me to develop my knowledge and skills to a point where I am now ready to go out and do it on my own.

Volunteering with the Surrey Wildlife Trust has been so much fun but also very valuable. I have learned far more than I ever expected and I can’t thank the Outdoor Learning team enough for all they have done for me over the past year.
